New Orleans, Louisiana Snakes are in every state of our country. you will at one time or more in your life run across them, whether in your garden, garage or even in your home.

The top three pictures to the side were sent to me by a client that took these in New Orleans, Louisiana at an oil well site, I thought it a very compelling advocacy of the common Rat snake and their benefits.

New Orleans, Louisiana Eastern and Western Rat snakes are one of my favorite snakes just because they are so fascinating. For one thing they don’t need the sun to metabolize their foods. this means that they don’t have to be out in the sun to digest their meals. they hang out in crawl spaces and even attics for months at a time where other snakes would need to come and go.

So its no wonder that I am called on most of my reptile calls to remove them.

Although typically a very dark almost black top with pasterns blended in the scales of the black snake and usually have a light underbelly, in youth black snake or rat snake patterns are more present and are most often confused with Copperhead.

Very territorial, the black snake or rat snake will kill , even consume any snake that would happen into there areas. As fierce hunters they can set up ambush in almost any place. they have great eye to boot. this is way it is very beneficial to allow their presence if at all possible.. “better a black snake than a poisonous snake farmers used to say” , it is actually true.

Although I love these amazing snakes, Black snake or rat snakes have no place in our homes.

This is why The wildlife Professionals snake removal services are here! we are great at removing snakes and even excluding snakes from your house to avoid future snake removal occurrences. We have snake treatments as well that we can use to ensure a safe snake free yards and play area snake free zones as well.

Copperhead Snakes or Agkistrodon Contortrix

When Copperhead snakes are born (alive, and not from eggs) they look like adults except for the yellowish or greenish tail coloration.
Copperhead Habitat:  Most copperhead snakes prefer open Rocky Woodland , Rock Edges, and open grassland near woodland outcrops. Copperheads blend in tremendously with most leaf litter.
In the Summer(Hot) Months Copperheads become nocturnal.
In Spring and Fall they are often found on Wooded Hilltop Rock Outcrops with a southern exposure.
Mother Copperhead snakes typically give birth from August to October depending the area or state they live in, and they give live birth and not from eggs.
Food consists of insects, frogs, toads, lizards, small birds, other snake and they love rodents.

Prairie Rattlesnake: Crotalus Viridus
a Pitt Viper Snake, Has one of the largest rattles of most if rattlesnakes. Dark Gray or Brown Blotches, Head body and tail are greenish gray to brown. Tails bands are similar color to body blotches, belly grayish white. youth looks similar to adults.
Habitat: Rocky Canyon or open prairies with abundant small wildlife that burrow to feed upon. They are burrow explorer experts.
in Spring and fall they prefer south facing hillsides with large rock outcrops.
Summer months they become nocturnal exploring the grasslands and prairies for food such as lizards, mice, rats, chipmunks, gophers, prairie dogs and other smaller snakes.

Bats in the attic are our most common call, bats in the attic will roost and defecate (poop and pee) in the attic insulation. This can be hazardous to humans health. This is why are technicians are trained in attic restoration, attic insulation removal and attic insulation replacement and attic disinfectant procedures. Insuring humane bat removal, exclusion and safe bat control in your home.

Bat extermination in New Orleans County, LA. Never ever use a company that uses bat extermination practices! Bats are an important key to our environment and they are federally protected. A bat can eat its own weight in insects per night and they are a fantastic way to keep insects in check. Bats reproduce very slowly, a female bat may only have one offspring a year.

Do bat repellents work? No known repellent works at this time. And some of the known uses are moth balls which active ingredient doesn’t seem to be very effective on bats or the bat colony. Flashing lights have been sold to persuade bats out of the attic, though these practices are not effective. Please don’t waste the money on theses practices.

What is bat exclusion?  An bat exclusion is the repair work or sealing the house or business and using a one way bat door to allow the bat colony to leave the structure and not allow access back into the house. This is the most humane and safest way to get rid of bats. Bat removal by bat exclusion is very difficult and a bat removal professional should always perform the bat exclusion to ensure complete bat removal and bat exclusion form the home.

Why is a bat flying around in my house? Usually when a bat is found flying in the house it is a red flag of a larger issue. If you have a bat in your house there is a good chance that you have a bat colony living somewhere in your house, most likely in the attic, though a wildlife professional can inspect and give options.

We also provide dead bat removal and dead animal removal. When dealing with dead animal odors smells its best to use a dead animal removal specialist.

Can you trap bats? The answer is yes, though it can kill the bat colony if the bat trap is not checked often or if the bat trap is placed in a place that allows the elements to get to the colony trapped. Bats are fragile and can be killed if exposed to cold weather or extreme heat. We use One Way Bat Doors to make sure this don’t happen

How do I get rid of bats in my house? This is a great question and the answer is call your local animal control or bat control experts.

Noises in the attic. When dealing with bats in the attic this can cause noises in the attic or walls. It seems that when dealing with animal control issues in the attic noises in the wall and attic are typical.

Raccoons are round, fuzzy creatures with bushy tails and a black mask of fur that covers their eye area. These animals may look like cute, cuddly bandits, but they can be quite fearsome when approached.聽
Size
Raccoons are about as big as small dogs. They grow to about 23 to 37 inches (60 to 95 centimeters) and weigh 4 to 23 lbs. (1.8 to 10.4 kilograms), according to聽National Geographic.
Habitat
Raccoons are found in North and Central America, Europe and Japan. They are very adaptable, so they live in a wide range of climates and habitats. They typically make homes, called dens, in trees or caves, though they will also make homes in barns, abandoned vehicles and other man-made locations, according to聽New Hampshire Public Television.
Though raccoons are more than happy to make human areas their homes, they can be vicious when approached by humans. Humans should be particuarlly cautious of approaching raccoons because they are common carriers of rabies, roundworms and leptospirosis, according to聽The Human Society. Most experts do not recommend having a raccoon as a pet.聽
Habits
Raccoons are not very social creatures. They are nocturnal and sleep during the day. During the winter, they tend to sleep more, but they do not hibernate in the traditional sense. They simply sleep while their bodies live off stored fat. They lose around 50 percent of their body weight during the winter, according to the University of Michigan’s聽Animal Diversity Web(ADW).聽
Though these animals look like the outlaws of the outdoors, raccoons are very clean creatures. They are known to wash their food in streams and even dig latrines in areas they frequent regularly.聽
Diet
As omnivores, raccoons eat vegetation and meat. The vegetation in their diet consists of cherries, apples, acorns, persimmons, berries, peaches, citrus fruits, plums, wild grapes, figs, watermelons, beech nuts, corn and walnuts. When it comes to meat, raccoons consume more invertebrates than vertebrates, according to the ADW. Some of the raccoon鈥檚 favorite animal treats are frogs, fish, crayfish, insects, rodents and bird eggs. When food is scarce, raccoons aren鈥檛 above scavenging human trash or eating roadkill.聽

Offspring
Baby raccoons are called kits or cubs and are usually born in the early summer. Females have one to seven offspring after a gestation period of 60 to 73 days. As a group, a mother and her baby raccoons are called a nursery.
For the first two months of their lives, babies live in their den and are weened at 7 to 16 weeks. At 12 weeks, they will start to roam away from their mothers for whole nights at a time, according to the聽Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. They become completely independent at 8 to 12 months of age. Raccoons live around 2 to 3 years in the wild.
